Dr Gary Thomas was Chief Technology Officer for Display Technologies for the business divisions of Philips from From 1998 to 2003. This included both coordination of internal display strategy and innovation and scouting external display-related technologies for Philips and Philips’ joint ventures. Before that, Dr Thomas was Senior Vice President of Philips Research with broad responsibilities in display research in CRT, LCD, OLED and LCoS displays. He was also responsible for research in optical storage, semiconductor lasers, precision mechanics and analytical instrumentation.
Since 2003, he has been active as a consultant, primarily to start-up companies in the display and solid-state lighting areas. From 2003 until the acquisition by Dolby in 2007, he was a member of the Technical Advisory Board and Business Advisory Board of Brightside Technologies in Vancouver who developed High Dynamic Range LCD displays. After the Dolby acquisition, he continued for a year as an advisor to Dolby.
He is at present advisor to Nanolumens in Norcross, Georgia (large-area flexible advertising displays, see www.Nanolumens.com ). In addition he advises venture capital companies on start-up companies in Israel and the U.S.
Dr Thomas received both his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and following postdoctoral work at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, California he joined Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1970.
