About

NEXT GENERATION REFLECTIVE DISPLAY

CLEARink Displays is a US incorporated venture backed startup, with R&D in US and Canada. CLEARink aims to revolutionize the reflective display industry by developing reflective display modules, based on proprietary technology, that combines the daylight readability of paper with the colorful video performance of digital displays. The company was formed in 2012 by a number of co-founders who have together started over 10 companies, including Vancouver success stories TIR (sold to Philips) and Brightside (sold to Dolby). The company has also attracted a world-class advisory team, which includes a former CTO from Philips and a former CEO from Barco.

CLEARink’s unique and patented technology was originally developed at the University of British Columbia. The company currently holds 23 patents with several more pending. The development is being supported by co-development partners and potential customers in Taiwan, the Netherlands, the UK, and USA.

Products

CLEARink Displays develops reflective display modules that are low power, full-colour, outdoor-readable, video capable, and all that at a cost comparable to LCD. CLEARink’s display modules will revolutionize the use cases for wearables, smartphones/tablets, electronic shelf labels and outdoor signage, the total combined accessible market of which will be over $12 billion by 2018. Evaluation kits will be available from mid 2016 and first products will start to ship from January 2017.

Technology

CLEARink’s technology is based on varying the brightness of a specially designed reflector film by modulating the total internal reflection of ambient light from the film, using a single electrically charged particle suspended in a liquid.  The inherent simplicity of CLEARink’s technology also leads management to believe that manufacturing costs will be lower than for any other reflective display technology, at comparable volumes. The technology progress to date has been beyond expectations:

– Demonstrated displays with a brightness that exceeds those in commercial e-readers
– A much brighter display leading to a market leading color reflective display
– Demonstrated displays with high frame rates, enabling Internet surfing capability
– Power usage well below that of other display technologies such as LCD or OLED, and only slightly above traditional monochrome reflective displays

CLEARink is focused on outsourcing key component development tasks to vendor companies that are leaders in their respective space, and the manufacturing strategy is to leverage existing infrastructure in the Far East.

CLEARink Displays and Suzhou JinFu Establish Joint Venture

JV to Commercialize Innovative, Reflective Displays in China

Santa Clara, May 23, 2016 – CLEARink Displays and Suzhou Jinfu (SZSE: 300128) today announced that they have established a Joint Venture in Shanghai, China. The Joint Venture will commercialize CLEARink’s breakthrough reflective display technology for various ePaper applications in China.

JinFu, a Suzhou, China based company was founded in 2004 and is listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. With a market cap of over US$1b and about 4,000 employees JinFu today supplies display modules and assemblies to various applications including mobile devices. Its customers include BOE, Foxconn, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, and others. Jinfu has a strong presence in the display market in China including robust channels into various targeted ePaper market segments.

The Joint Venture will address established and emerging reflective display market applications including mobile phones, wearable devices, tablets and eReaders. The Joint Venture will also supply electronic shelf labels to the massive Chinese retail market, where dynamic pricing and price accuracy are most desired.

“JinFu has been very successful in the display industry in China and our JV with CLEARink will give us access to a technology that meets so many of our customers’ needs,” said Mr. Fu Guoping, Founder and Chairman of JinFu. “CLEARink’s technology and our cost effective display manufacturing expertise together will realize the true potential for ePaper.”

CLEARink intends to launch its first monochrome product in early 2017, and will unveil its first color reflective display prototypes, at the occasion of SID’s Display Week 2016 in San Francisco. The color displays will be launched commercially in 2018.

“Our Joint Venture with JinFu will deliver cost effective reflective displays in China. Using CLEARink displays, mobile device makers will finally be able offer devices that are sunlight readable, always-on, while also having a long battery life”, said Frank Christiaens, founder & CEO of CLEARink Displays. “The overwhelming response we have received from potential customers shows a big gap in the display market that CLEARink can address.”

Interested mobile device makers that are visiting DisplayWeek 2016 can contact scott@clearinkdisplays.com to set a time to see product demos in CLEARink’s private suite.
